Are Spiders Friend or Foe?

For most of us, spiders look scary. As far as I am concerned, I am very likely to scream if I spot one inside my home. Plus, we’ve all heard about the deadly Black Widow. But are premier pest control Regina really dangerous? Let us take a closer look.

Grass spider

Grass spiders are easily identified by the webs they weave: sheet-like, mostly horizontal, and concave. They also spin a funnel on the side to have a place to hide. The spider itself has dorsal markings and measures up to 2 cm in length. Grass spiders can move very quickly, but they are also very shy. As such, they are unlikely to come near you and bite you. When a bite does happen, people experience itching, redness and swelling for up to 10 days. However, the consequences are not serious.

Common house spider

This type of spider is very common in North America, and is present all year. They feed on insects, other spiders or even small animals that get caught in their web. They can sometimes be confused for brown widows, but actual widows are the only spiders that have a red or orange marking in the form of an hourglass on their underside. In addition, unlike the widow, the common house spider will rarely bite. If a bite does happen though, it will be without serious consequences.

Wolf spider

The wolf spider is native to Canada and, despite its scary looks, will only cause mild redness and swelling when it bites. They will also only bite when threatened. Unlike other spiders they do not catch their prey on their webs, but hunt them down on the ground, a bit like a wolf… that is where they got their name!

Lost spiders

Okay, this is not actually a type of spider. However, many spiders non-native to Saskatchewan or even Canada can sometimes be spotted in our neighborhoods. They are brought in by shipments of food, in most cases. Fruit from the tropics are particularly likely to bring us a spider or us as an extra bonus.

One of them is the famous black widow, which bite is in reality rarely fatal. More often than not, it wild cause mild muscle pain that can last for several days. In any case, if you just got bitten and are unsure of the attacker, always visit a doctor or a hospital emergency services to check that everything is alright.

10 things you didn’t know about mice

Mice are pests we would rather see outside than in our homes. They can be tiny and cute, but also deadly when they carry diseases around. But you know that already. How about those 10 crazy facts? They will help you get to know mice better!

1. They don’t like the cold

Mice hate winters! This is why as soon as the temperatures start to drop, mice will try to find a warm shelter with food available. You have probably guessed it, in most cases, this shelter is your home!

2. They can’t see very well

Mice do not have a very well developed eyesight. They see better in dim light, and are nearly blind when it gets very bright. However, they make up for it by having well developed smell, hearing and touch. On those three, they are much better than us humans. This might explain why they can smell this open bag of chips a few rooms away…

3. They can jump really high

Mice are tiny but mighty. They can jump up to more than 25 cm, when their average height is between 3 and 10 cm. Converted to human sizes, this would mean we would be able to jump 8.5 meters high!

4. They like to chew

Mice need to chew and gnaw on things to grind their teeth. Unfortunately, when they are in homes, they particularly seem to enjoy electrical wires. Besides the fact that it kills your appliances, this can lead to fire hazards with potentially significant consequences.

5. Their teeth never stop growing

Just like most rodents, mice’s incisive teeth never stop growing. On average, they grow 0.3mm every day! Now you probably understand their need to gnaw and chew a little bit better.

6. They are very particular about their traveling plans

One could say mice are kind of OCD when it comes to traveling. Indeed, they will adjust their routes to be able to walk along side edges or walls.

7. They are fantastic climbers

If the surface is rough, mice can climb up to 2m on a vertical surface. Impressive! They also have the ability to walk on ropes and wires without falling down.

8. They love food

That’s maybe the only thing we have in common with mice… love for food! While they only take small quantities each time they visit a food source, mice can come back to it 15 to 20 times in a single day… Yep, you heard that right.

9. They have a short lifespan in the wild

While they can live for two years when kept as pets, life expectancy is closer to 5 months for mice living in the wild. This is mostly due to their numerous predators including snakes, cats, and foxes.

10. They can get through very tiny holes

Mice have very flexible rib bones, allowing them to squeeze through any tiny hole as long as their head fits in them.

If you have a mice problem in your home, contact us for help and information.

Do bed bugs hibernate?

Are the dreaded bed bugs a summer-only pest? Do they go to sleep and forget about us in the winter? Well… unfortunately, not exactly. Bed bugs do not like the cold, but instead of staying out and freezing, or going into hibernation, they will do their best to find a temperate environment. You probably guessed that, in most cases, this environment ends up being your home.

Bed bugs and the cold

Bed bugs will remain active as long as they can access a food source. However, bed bugs do slow down their activity during the colder months. They can also go into a hibernation-like state if temperatures drop significantly. Adults can survive like that for several months, without feeding. If temperatures drop below -18°C for several days though, bed bugs will die in the cold.

Cosy blankets

During the winter, bed bugs are making their way inside to stay warm, and they can even get extra cosy in there. When the weather gets colder we humans like to sleep in thick comforters and wear extra comfy wooly clothes. And this is a bed bug heaven! The thickness give them more space to relax in and reproduce, and makes it more difficult for us to spot them.

Bed bugs also like the darkness. Indeed, you will rarely see them come out on a bright sunny day. Winter is then perfect for them, with short days and low brightness.

How do you get rid of bed bugs?

Getting rid of bed bugs once they have settled in your home can be quite a challenge. Start by getting rid of all the clutter you may have accumulated. Make sure to cover all the rooms, and not just where you have spotted the bed bugs.

Then, vacuuming your home thoroughly might get rid of some of the bed bugs. Cover the floors, the carpets, furniture, upholstery, and bed frames. Throw the vacuum bag away once you are done so the bugs cannot escape and re-infest your home.

Call a professional

Eventually, when facing a significant bed bug infestation, calling a professional is by far the best choice to make. Bed bugs die when their body temperature goes over 45°C, which can be achieved using special heating machines. We discourage you to do it on your own, as you may not be able to cover all the infested sites. In addition, the wrong temperature could damage your furniture and mattresses.

If you suspect a bed bug infestation in your home, contact us for help and information.

What would the world look like if pest management did not exist?

You may not know it yet, but pest management is about much more than just removing scary spiders from people’s living rooms. In some cases, pests can be useful, and even beneficial for their environment, and should left alone or protected. In other cases, they need to be eliminated to avoid some situations getting out of hand. In a few paragraphs, here is what the world would look like if pest management did not exist.

Rare diseases would not be so rare

Efficient pest management has allowed humans to eradicate deadly diseases from at least some parts of the world. In 1347, an epidemic of bubonic plague spread rapidly across the European continent, killing an estimated 75 to 200 millions people in less than 10 years. The plague was brought by ship merchants bringing infected rats for Central Asia. The disease is carried and spread by fleas biting the animals.

Today, the plague is only present in a small number of countries. Such an important pandemic in unlikely to happen again, thanks to insecticides and rodent population control. Thank you pest management!

Food supplies would not be edible

Food storage managers need to do a lot of work to keep rodents and insects out of their products. For them, pest control is essential not to lose all their money. But if this was to happen, it would mean that us, at the end of the supply chain, would lose all our food. Adequate pest control needs to happen at home, too. Do you see yourself, freshly woken up in the morning, putting your hand in the cereal box and finding a rat instead? Well, goodbye breakfast…

Drinking water supplies are tightly controlled as well, as droppings and pee from rodents, for example, contaminate it. Without pest management, death rates would be much higher, due to food and water borne diseases.

A nuclear disaster could be very likely to occur

We all know that rodents love a good gnaw on wires, and to nest in warm and comfy places. Well, imagine for a second if that was happening inside a nuclear facility? And what if the gnawed wire was a critical one, that could lead to a malfunction in the facility. In other words, we are pretty sure pest management companies are saving the world.

Many homes would be damaged

Pests, such as rodents, insects and ants, can do significant damage to houses and apartment buildings. Keeping them out is essential for our homes to remain inhabitable. In the USA, termites alone cause around 1.5 billion dollars in damage every year. Imagine what that number would be without pest control…

What’s the problem with carpenter ants?

Ants are often seen as harmless insects that we just dislike seeing inside our homes. However, it turns out that they are real pests that can cause significant damage if not ousted out quickly enough. So, what is the problem exactly with carpenter ants, and how do you get rid of them?

Carpenter ants do not eat wood…

Carpenter ants are often mistaken for termites, but they are not termites. They do not feed on wood. Instead, they prefer protein and carbohydrate sources fond in dead insects. They extract the fluids and edible parts from the dead body before taking them back to their nests, leaving the carcass behind. Carpenter ants go hunting alone, or in groups. They are quite big in size compared to other types of ants, with an average of 24mm.

… but carpenter ants do nest in wood

Carpenter ants however, build their nests in wood. And this is exactly where the problem lies! They build large networks of galleries and rooms by removing wood shavings, to construct a safe place for their queen, the rest of the colony and the food supplies. Carpenter ants prefer places where wood is subject to moisture, as it is more tender and easier to dig into. as a consequences, colonies of ants are often found around windows, in roof eaves, or in house decks and porches.

Once a primary colony has settled, secondary ones will often form around. This explains why if the first colony of ants is not removed promptly, carpenter ants can cause significant damage to the wood construction in your home.

How can you get rid of carpenter ants?

To avoid carpenter ants choosing your home to nest, make sure there are no humid areas, especially around wood constructions and furniture. Make sure no pipe is leaking around the house, and rain water cannot make its way in.

If you spot carpenter ants in your home, the first thing to do is to figure out where exactly they live. One thing that help you identify it is the fact that more often than not, a pile of wood shavings and dead ants lie near the entrance of the galleries of a nest.

If the colony is small and you have identified the entrance of the nest, you can use a vacuum to suck any ants living inside. Placing a bait just outside is also effective. However, if the colony has gotten bigger already, the best option is to call a pest control professional to take care of the problem.

Did you know your commercial property also needs pest control?

Pest control is often thought about for private homes. However, did you know pet control and prevention is also needed for commercial buildings? Learn why and avoid dealing with a bad infestation!

Keep employees and customers healthy

In some businesses more than others, hygiene is a big deal. Think about schools, restaurants or medical facilities. Surely, they cannot afford for a single pest to invade them. However, more traditional office buildings are also at risk of suffering health issues in case of a pest infestation.

Rodents can crazy diseases inside the buildings with them, such as salmonella, rat-bite fever, or even the bubonic plague. The disease can be transmitted through a direct bite, but this happens only very rarely. The real threat lies in the diseases spread by rodent urine and droppings. In addition, rodents can spread fleas, ticks and mice in building, which can in turn infect humans.

Cockroaches can cause asthma due to the allergens they spread in the places they live in. As such, an office infested with cockroaches is a very unhealthy environment for the sensitive population, as this is where they spend most of their day.

Avoid contamination of stocks

If your business stores some products for an extensive amount of time, or if you own a warehouse, it is important for stockpiles to be kept pest-free. Rats, insects or other rodents choosing your products to settle their home can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

Businesses not noticing the infestation right away can also mistakenly send out contaminated products, which will ruin their reputation for good. Again, this is an important economic hazard that could be easily avoided by keeping the warehouses pest-free. Keep in mind that once a pest has settled in, it is often very hard to get rid of it, especially in large areas. Preforming regular pest treatments and pest control will drastically reduce the chances of this happening.

Much bigger dumpsters

As office buildings host larger numbers of people than homes, the trash areas are consequently bigger as well. It is commonly accepted that trash attracts pests of all kinds. Thus, it is even more important for commercial building to keep their trash areas clean, and not too close from the buildings. This is especially true for businesses like restaurants or hotels, for example.

How to stay safe?

In the case of commercial establishments, the safest option is to get help from a professional pest control company Regina. They will help keep the environment clean, healthy and pest free by carrying out inspections once or several times a year, and can act fast if any anomaly is detected. This will avoid costly mistakes, may it be in terms of money or health!

How to avoid cockroaches this fall

When the weather gets colder, cockroaches start looking for a shelter for the winter days. Their requirements are simple: they need food and a warm place to hide. For that reason, it is completely possible to suffer a cockroach infestation even with a sparkling house. Of course, leaving mess and food leftovers are likely to make matters worse.

Having a cockroach infestation can be a major problem for the health. Indeed, they can carry diseases and transmit them to humans, as well as contaminate the food in which they dig to eat. In some cases, they can cause allergic reactions and even trigger asthma crises.

As the fall is now in full blast, here are a few tips to keep your home cockroach-free, and keep it that way through the winter.

Keep your house clean and tidy

This may sound obvious, but it is better to say it again. Cockroaches like messy places because they can dig in and settle down in a nice cosy place for the winter. If there is no clutter, there is nowhere for them to hide. It is as simple as it gets.

Seal all cracks and holes

To get inside houses and apartments, cockroaches take advantage of cracks in the walls, or badly sealed vents, pipes and drains. Make sure all gaps around pipes are properly sealed, patch up any cracks you see. Cockroaches can take advantage of even the smallest openings, so keep your eyes wide open pest control Regina!

Get rid of food sources

Cockroaches need some food to survive. If there is no food available in your home, they will prefer to find some place else to set up shelter for the winter. Store all food in sealed containers. Keep all the eating in one room to avoid spreading crumbs and food waste all over the house. Make sure this room is spick and span before going to bed each night. It is easier to clean one place than all the bedrooms every day!

Also, do not leave garbage over night outside the house, as it could attract cockroaches who will first come for the food, and then get inside for some warmth. Prefer a trash can with a lid to plastic bags.

Proof your house with a professional

A professional will have a better eye to spot any cracks that could be used by cockroaches to enter your home. If an infestation is suspected, appropriate spraying will be performed. Finally, professional pest controllers can give you additional tips and tricks to keep your home cockroach-free this winter.

How to Keep Rodents Away From Your Home This Fall

When colder days start to come, rodents seek shelter and try to find a warmer dwelling place. Unfortunately, in urban areas, this warm place is often someone’s home. As the weather is already getting colder, here are a few tips to keep your house rodent free.

House mouse

The house mouse is the most common rodent pest. Even though it is small in size, it can bring in a number of disturbances into the house. For example, mouse urine can cause allergies, especially in children. In addition, house mice can carry diseases such as meningitis or salmonella. They can bring fleas, ticks, and lice along with them. Finally, they will often cause problems in the kitchen, as they will raid your cabinets for food.

To prevent house mice from coming in, make sure your house has no holes open on the outside. Be careful, as a hole only as big as the diameter of a regular pencil is enough for a mouse to go through! Declutter your home to remove any potential house building areas for the mice. rat traps are ineffective to trap mice, who are small enough to escape them pest control Regina

Roof rat

The roof rat is most commonly found in vines or trees. When it comes into homes, it prefers to settle in attics, roofs, or in the upper floors of apartment buildings. you will rarely see them, as they are mainly nocturnal animals.

As they often come back to the same source of food when they have found one, make sure to proof all your kitchen and pantry cabinets, so that no food can be accessed by pests. make sure all holes are sealed to prevent the rats from coming inside. It is dangerous to have a rat infestation, as they can carry serious diseases such as the plague, typhus, salmonellosis and rat-bite fever. As a consequence, react immediately if you suspect one or several rats live in your home and call a pest control professional for help.

Norway rat

Norway rats are bigger in size than roof rats and are just as dangerous due to the diseases that can bring in with them. They can also cause substantial damage to properties, as they like to dig tunnels and gnaw. Last but not least, they can contaminate food when searching the kitchen. Keep in mind that Norway rats are social animals, and they often build their burrows next to one another. If you spot one in your home, it is very likely that his friends are hiding there as well.

To prevent Norway rats from infesting your home, remove clutter and store any piles of wood away from the house. Make sure there are no holes in the walls and seal them where applicable.
